Canadian Solar Panels Review (2026): Are They Any Good?

Canadian Solar has been making panels since 2001 and is one of the few big brands headquartered outside China. This review covers the TOPHiKu6 panels you’re most likely to be quoted in the UK: efficiency, what the model codes mean, the warranty small print (which varies more than most brands), what they cost, how they compare with JA Solar, Jinko, Trina and Aiko, where they’re really made, and whether the company’s shift towards batteries affects your 30-year warranty.

★★★★★ Trusted by UK homeowners

The short version: Yes, Canadian Solar panels are good. The current TOPHiKu6 uses N-type TOPCon cells at 21.5–22.8% efficiency, has a good temperature coefficient (-0.29%/°C) and degrades slowly (0.4% a year). Canadian Solar has been a Kiwa PVEL Top Performer in independent reliability testing in every scorecard from 2023 to 2026. It’s priced like JA Solar, Jinko and Trina: a 4kW system costs about £5,500–£7,500 installed with 0% VAT. Two things to watch. First, make sure the quote says TOPHiKu6 (TOPCon), not the older HiKu6 (PERC). Second, check the product warranty, because UK listings for the same panel show anything from 12 to 25 years. Get the number in writing and it’s a solid value choice for a normal roof.

Who are Canadian Solar?

Canadian Solar was founded in 2001 in Guelph, Ontario, by Dr Shawn Qu, who is still its chairman. It’s now headquartered in Kitchener, Ontario, and has been listed on the NASDAQ (ticker CSIQ) since 2006. Its manufacturing arm, CSI Solar, also listed separately in Shanghai in 2023. It has delivered well over 100GW of panels worldwide since 2001. These days it ships fewer panels a year than the Chinese giants Jinko, Trina, LONGi and JA Solar, but it’s still one of the best-known names in solar.

Three things matter for a UK homeowner:

  • Independent reliability testing. Kiwa PVEL puts panels through accelerated stress tests for heat, damp, freezing, mechanical load and hail. Canadian Solar has been named a Top Performer in each of the 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026 scorecards.
  • A listed, non-Chinese parent company. Canadian Solar reports its results publicly in the US, which makes its finances easier to scrutinise than many brands’.
  • It’s more than a panel maker now. Battery storage is its fastest-growing business, from grid-scale systems to the EP Cube home battery (more on that below).

Canadian Solar panels are MCS-listed and stocked by major UK wholesalers such as Segen, so most installers can get them. They turn up less often on UK home quotes than JA, Jinko or Trina, though, so you may need to ask for them. For how the big brands compare overall, see best solar panels UK.

Are Canadian Solar panels made in Canada?

No. Despite the name and the Ontario headquarters, the panels sold in the UK come from Canadian Solar’s factories in China and South-East Asia. The modules it put through Kiwa PVEL’s 2026 testing were built in Changshu, China, and Sriracha, Thailand. It is building up its US factories fast, including a module plant in Texas expanded to 10GW and a new cell factory in Indiana, but those supply the American market, not the UK.

That doesn’t make the panels worse. Almost every mainstream panel fitted in the UK is made in Asia. What matters is the panel’s testing record, the warranty and who stands behind it, not the country on the box.

The range: TOPHiKu6 and the rest

Canadian Solar names its panels in families. For UK homes, you’ll almost always be quoted a HiKu panel, with “TOP” at the front meaning TOPCon:

PanelCellsTypical wattageEfficiencyStatus in 2026
HiKu6P-type mono PERC390–420W~20–21.5%Previous generation. Fine if cheap, but ask for TOPHiKu6
TOPHiKu6N-type TOPCon420–455W21.5–22.8%The one most UK homes are quoted
HiKu7 / BiHiKuLarge-format, often bifacial540W+~21–23%Commercial roofs and solar farms, too big for most houses

The TOPHiKu6 is the sweet spot. It uses the N-type TOPCon cells that have replaced older PERC cells across the industry, and it comes in black-frame and all-black finishes. The all-black version, often listed as 435W or 455W, is the one to ask for if looks matter on a front roof. Your installer picks the wattage that fits your roof best. See solar panel sizes, 400W panels and types of solar panels.

Canadian Solar model codes decoded

Quotes and datasheets use codes like CS6R-440T. CS is Canadian Solar, the next part is the panel format, the number is the wattage, and the letters after it tell you the cell type or finish. What to look for on your quote:

Code on your quoteWhat it isWhat to do
CS6R-xxxT (e.g. CS6R-440T)TOPHiKu6, N-type TOPCon, 420–440W, about 1.95m²The current mainstream home panel
CS6.1-54TM / CS6.2-48TDNewer TOPHiKu6 versions, 440–455W, up to 22.8%Also current. Confirm the size fits your roof
CS6R-xxxMSHiKu6, P-type PERC, 390–420WPrevious generation, so ask about TOPHiKu6
CS6W, CS7N and similarLarge 540W+ commercial panelsOnly if your roof really suits a big panel

Some wholesalers add their own letters for the finish, such as AB for all-black or BF for black frame. The simplest rule is to check the panel name on the datasheet: if it says TOPHiKu6 or TOPCon, it’s the current generation. Plain “HiKu6” means the older PERC panel, which should be cheaper.

Efficiency and real-world UK output

The TOPHiKu6 runs from about 21.5% at 420W to 22.5% at 440W in the standard size, and up to 22.8% for the newer 455W version. That’s comfortably ahead of the ~20% panels of a few years ago and level with Jinko and JA Solar. It’s a touch behind Trina’s newest Vertex S+ and well behind the 24%+ back-contact panels from Aiko.

Efficiency is output per square metre. It matters on a small or awkward roof and hardly at all on a roof with room to spare, where one more panel closes the gap for less money. What you’ll actually generate depends far more on where you live and which way the roof faces. For ten 440W TOPHiKu6 panels (4.4kW), south-facing:

Where you liveAnnual output, 4.4kW Canadian SolarPer panel
South West & south coast4,400–4,900kWh440–490kWh
South East & Midlands4,000–4,500kWh400–450kWh
North of England & Wales3,700–4,100kWh370–410kWh
Scotland3,400–3,800kWh340–380kWh

Two spec-sheet numbers are worth knowing. The temperature coefficient of -0.29%/°C is good, meaning the panel loses little output on hot summer days. Degradation of 0.4% a year after a 1% first-year drop means a TOPHiKu6 should still be making about 87% of its original output after 30 years. Solar panel efficiency, solar panel output and the calculator go further.

Build, size and weight

The TOPHiKu6 versions typically fitted on UK homes have a glass front and a polymer backsheet behind, in a black aluminium frame. That’s the standard build for home panels and perfectly durable, but it’s worth knowing if you’re comparing it with Trina’s Vertex S+, which has glass on both faces. Canadian Solar’s own dual-glass bifacial panels are mainly larger commercial models.

TOPHiKu6 (CS6R-440T)Spec
Dimensions1,722 × 1,134 × 30mm (about 1.95m²)
Weight21.3kg
Cells108 half-cells, N-type TOPCon, monocrystalline
Temperature coefficient-0.29%/°C
FinishBlack frame or all-black

At under 2m² each, a typical three-bed semi’s main roof slope takes 8–12 TOPHiKu6 panels. How many panels fit your roof and how many you need will run the numbers. The weight is normal for a modern panel and fine for a sound pitched roof. Your installer should check older or slate roofs (solar on slate).

Warranty: 12 years or 25?

This is the part to read carefully, because Canadian Solar’s warranty varies more than most brands’. UK wholesaler Segen lists its current TOPHiKu6 panels with a 25-year product warranty and a 30-year power warranty. Other sellers list very similar TOPHiKu6 models with a 12-year product warranty, and a few older listings show only 25 years on power. The terms depend on the exact model, the datasheet version and the market the stock was made for.

CoverTOPHiKu6 (current UK stock)
Product warranty (manufacturing defects)25 years on many listings, 12 on some
Power warranty30 years
First-year degradation1% max
Annual degradation after year 10.4% max
Guaranteed output after 30 years≈87.4%

What to do: ask your installer to name the exact model, attach the datasheet and write the product warranty in years on the quote. If it says 12 years, ask whether a 25-year version is available at the same price. Often it is. Remember too that the manufacturer’s warranty covers the panel, not the labour to remove and replace it. That’s why the installer’s 10-year workmanship guarantee, ideally insurance-backed, matters as much as the panel’s. See solar panel warranties explained.

Can Canadian Solar honour a 30-year warranty?

It’s a fair question in 2026, when every big panel maker is under pressure from global oversupply. Canadian Solar reported revenue of $1.21bn (roughly £900m) and a net loss of $77m (about £57m) for April to June 2026. Its panel shipments fell 60% year on year to 3.1GW, while battery storage shipments rose 73% to 3.7GWh. The company is steering towards batteries and its new US factories, and panels are becoming a smaller share of what it does.

The honest assessment is that this is a large, diversified, publicly listed business, which is a very different risk from the small UK brands that have collapsed. Panels themselves rarely fail, and a Top Performer module is about the lowest-risk kit on your roof. The practical protection is the same as for any brand. Buy through an MCS installer with an insurance-backed workmanship guarantee, keep your datasheet and paperwork, and pay any deposit by credit card.

0% VAT only applies when panels are installed. Canadian Solar panels fitted by an installer carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, then 5%. If you buy panels on their own to fit yourself, you pay the standard 20%, and without MCS installation you can’t claim Smart Export Guarantee payments. See VAT on solar panels.

Canadian Solar panel prices in the UK

Canadian Solar is priced as a value-to-mid-range brand, in line with JA Solar, Jinko and Trina. European factory-gate prices for TOPCon panels like the TOPHiKu6 were around €0.11 per watt in mid-2026, under £50 for a 440W panel, and UK trade prices sit above that. As a fitted system with 0% VAT:

System (Canadian Solar TOPHiKu6)PanelsTypical installed priceWith 5kWh battery
3kW7£4,500–£6,000£7,500–£9,500
4kW9–10£5,500–£7,500£9,000–£11,500
6kW13–14£7,000–£9,500£10,500–£13,000

The panels are a small part of the bill, often under £1,000 of a £6,500 system, so switching brand rarely changes the total much. Scaffolding, labour, the inverter and any battery drive the price. That’s also why it’s worth insisting on the TOPHiKu6 rather than saving a few pounds on old HiKu6 stock. Full breakdown: solar panel cost UK and 4kW solar system.

Canadian Solar vs JA Solar, Jinko, Trina and Aiko

Aiko (back-contact)up to ~24.5%25 / 30 yrsPremiumSmall or shaded roofs

Canadian Solar vs JA Solar and Jinko: near-identical value propositions. All three offer N-type TOPCon panels at about 22% efficiency and similar prices. JA and Jinko more reliably come with a 25-year product warranty, so if the Canadian Solar quote says 12 years, that’s a reason to prefer them. Canadian Solar vs Trina: Trina’s Vertex S+ is slightly more efficient and dual-glass, with a longer unbroken Top Performer record. Canadian Solar’s edges are its good temperature coefficient and a Canadian, US-listed parent. Canadian Solar vs Aiko: Aiko wins on efficiency and shade tolerance, so pay the premium if your roof is small, split or shaded. On a normal roof with room to spare, any of the value brands gets you the same output for less. Rankings across all brands: best solar panels UK and most efficient solar panels.

Canadian Solar batteries: the EP Cube

Unlike most panel brands, Canadian Solar makes its own home battery. The EP Cube is a modular lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that stacks on a 7.6kW single-phase hybrid inverter, and it’s sold through UK distributors. A 7.6kW inverter with 10kWh of storage retails for around £4,000 before installation, and the battery modules carry up to a 15-year warranty depending on the version. In July 2026 Canadian Solar announced a more powerful EP Cube 2.0 and a three-phase version, and it isn’t yet clear when those reach the UK.

You don’t have to pair Canadian Solar panels with an EP Cube. The panels work with any mainstream inverter and battery, and the EP Cube is less common among UK installers than brands such as Fox ESS, Sunsynk or a Solis hybrid inverter. If an installer quotes the EP Cube, ask how many they’ve fitted and who handles warranty claims. See hybrid inverters, best solar batteries, and optimisers or micro-inverters if part of your roof is shaded.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • Kiwa PVEL Top Performer in every scorecard from 2023 to 2026
  • Modern N-type TOPCon cells at 21.5–22.8% efficiency
  • Good -0.29%/°C temperature coefficient and 0.4%/yr degradation
  • Value pricing, in line with JA Solar, Jinko and Trina
  • Canadian-headquartered, US-listed company with public accounts
  • Its own EP Cube home battery if you want one brand

Cons

  • Product warranty varies (12 or 25 years), so check the datasheet
  • Older PERC HiKu6 stock still turns up on quotes
  • Glass-backsheet build rather than dual glass on most home panels
  • Less common on UK home quotes than JA, Jinko or Trina
  • Loss-making in 2026, with panels a shrinking part of the business

Our verdict

4.3 / 5. Canadian Solar panels are a well-tested, value choice for a standard UK roof. The TOPHiKu6 combines modern TOPCon cells, a good temperature coefficient and four straight years as a Kiwa PVEL Top Performer, at the same price as the big value brands. It scores a little below Trina, JA Solar and Jinko only because its warranty terms vary so much between listings. Two checks will get you the best of it. Make sure the quote names the TOPHiKu6 rather than the older HiKu6, and get a 25-year product warranty confirmed in writing. If your roof is small or shaded, spend more on Aiko. Otherwise pick whichever value brand your installer prices best, and choose the installer carefully (how to choose, MCS certification, UK solar companies compared).

Canadian Solar panels: frequently asked questions

Are Canadian Solar panels any good?

Yes. Canadian Solar’s current TOPHiKu6 panels use N-type TOPCon cells at 21.5–22.8% efficiency, with a good -0.29%/°C temperature coefficient and 0.4% annual degradation. Canadian Solar was named a Kiwa PVEL Top Performer for reliability in every scorecard from 2023 to 2026. It isn’t the most efficient panel you can buy, but it’s a well-tested value choice for a standard UK roof, as long as you check the product warranty on your quote.

Are Canadian Solar panels made in Canada?

No. Canadian Solar is headquartered in Kitchener, Ontario, and listed on the NASDAQ, but the panels sold in the UK are made in its factories in China and South-East Asia. The modules it put through Kiwa PVEL’s 2026 testing were built in Changshu, China, and Sriracha, Thailand. Its US factories in Texas and Indiana supply the American market.

What warranty do Canadian Solar panels have?

Current TOPHiKu6 panels carry a 30-year power warranty, with 1% first-year degradation and 0.4% a year after that, leaving about 87.4% of original output after 30 years. The product warranty varies: UK wholesaler Segen lists 25 years, but other sellers list 12 years for very similar models. Ask your installer to name the exact model and confirm the product warranty in years on the quote.

How much do Canadian Solar panels cost in the UK?

Canadian Solar is priced in line with JA Solar, Jinko and Trina. A 4kW Canadian Solar system typically costs around £5,500–£7,500 installed with 0% VAT until 31 March 2027, or £9,000–£11,500 with a 5kWh battery. The panels themselves are usually under £1,000 of the total. Panels bought on their own carry 20% VAT.

What’s the difference between HiKu6 and TOPHiKu6?

TOPHiKu6 is the current generation, using N-type TOPCon cells at 21.5–22.8% efficiency. HiKu6 without the TOP is the previous generation, using P-type PERC cells at around 20–21.5%. The price gap is now small, so if your quote names HiKu6 or a CS6R-MS model code, ask whether the TOPHiKu6 is available instead.

Canadian Solar vs JA Solar vs Jinko: which is best?

All three offer N-type TOPCon panels at about 22% efficiency and similar prices, so any of them is a good choice for a standard roof. Canadian Solar’s edges are a good temperature coefficient and a Canadian, US-listed parent company. JA Solar and Jinko more consistently come with a 25-year product warranty. In practice, choose whichever your installer prices best, and spend more on Aiko only if your roof is small or shaded.

Figures are typical 2026 UK estimates for guidance only. Efficiency, warranty terms and prices vary by exact model, datasheet version and installer. Specifications are from Canadian Solar TOPHiKu6 (CS6R-T and CS6.2-48TD) datasheets and UK wholesaler listings. Reliability status is from the Kiwa PVEL PV Module Reliability Scorecard. Financial figures are from Canadian Solar’s published Q2 2026 results, converted at approximate exchange rates. EP Cube prices are typical UK retail listings in September 2026. Output ranges are indicative and depend on location, orientation, pitch and shading. 0% VAT on installed residential solar applies until 31 March 2027 per HMRC. Always confirm the exact model, datasheet and warranty with an MCS-certified installer.
