The short answer

Allow roughly 2m² of clear roof per panel. Measure your roof face’s width and slope length, multiply for area, subtract chimneys, windows and a 30–40cm border, then divide by 2 — that’s your panel count. A typical UK semi’s main face holds 10–14 panels (4–6kW); use both faces and 20+ becomes realistic.

The estimate gets you 90% of the way. The last 10% — shading through the seasons, rafter condition, exact layout — is what a free installer survey settles, and it’s the number worth trusting before you spend anything.

Every solar journey hits this question early: forget budgets and brands for a second — what will the roof physically take? It sets the ceiling on everything else: system size, savings, whether an EV or heat pump can ride along later. And it’s answerable from your garden with a tape measure and the arithmetic below.

One useful distinction before we start: this page answers how many panels fit. How many you need is a different question — driven by your electricity usage, not your tiles — and for most homes the answer is “fewer than fit”. Roof capacity is your ceiling; usage sets your target. (Panel dimensions themselves, weights and spec detail live in our panel sizes and dimensions guide — this page is the layout maths on top.)

The 2-minute roof maths

Modern residential panels measure about 1.7–1.9m × 1.1m — call it 2m² each once mounting gaps are included. So the whole calculation is:

The formula

(Roof width × slope length) − obstructions − edge border = usable area.
Usable area ÷ 2 = your panel count.

Example: a roof face 8m wide with a 5m slope = 40m². Minus a chimney (−2m²) and the border (−6m²) = 32m² usable = 16 panels ≈ 7kW.

Measuring without leaving the ground

  • Width: measure along the wall at ground level — the roof is the same width (plus small overhangs you can ignore). No tape? Pace it: one big stride ≈ 1m.
  • Slope length: the sneaky one. For the standard UK pitch of 35–40°, slope length ≈ 1.25 × the horizontal depth (the front-to-ridge distance you can estimate from the gable end or from house plans). A two-storey house’s slope typically runs 4.5–5.5m.
  • Satellite check: online mapping tools let you trace your roof outline and read off the footprint — multiply the sloped faces by that same 1.25 and you’ve cross-checked your numbers from your sofa.
  • The proper version: an installer’s surveyor does this with measured drawings, a shade analysis across the whole year, and a structural check of the rafters — free, as part of quoting. Your garden estimate tells you if solar’s worth pursuing; the survey tells you exactly what to buy.

Worked examples: what fits on UK house types

House typeMain face (typical)Both faces / maxSystem size
Mid-terrace (2-bed)6–8 panels12–162.5–3.5kW (main face)
Semi-detached (3-bed)10–14 panels20–284–6kW (main face)
Detached (4-bed)14–18 panels28–366–8kW (main face)
Bungalow (larger footprint)12–20 panels24–405–9kW
Detached + garage/outbuilding18–24+—8–10kW+

Those main-face numbers explain the UK market perfectly: the standard semi fits 9–10 panels comfortably, which is exactly a 4kW system — the national default. Push to both faces or add outbuildings and you’re in 10kW territory, where the per-kilowatt price drops but roof geometry becomes the whole game.

What quietly shrinks your roof

  • Chimneys: the stack plus working clearance costs 2–3 panel spaces — and a chimney’s shadow can cost more than its footprint on string-inverter systems.
  • Roof windows: each one plus its clearance ≈ 1–2 panels gone.
  • Vent pipes, aerials, satellite dishes: half to one panel each — though aerials and dishes can often be relocated cheaply, buying a space back.
  • The edge border: installers keep panels 30–40cm inside all roof edges for wind uplift and access — on a small face this border alone eats 4–6m².
  • Shade strips: a neighbour’s tree or a dormer can render a strip of tiles technically available but economically pointless. This is where the free survey earns its keep: surveyors model sun paths across the year, not just the day they visit — and where clever kit choices rescue partial shade (see the optimiser and microinverter options in our inverters guide).

Layout tricks that fit more panels

  • Portrait vs landscape: installers mix orientations to tessellate around obstructions — turning panels sideways along a low strip above the gutter often adds a row the portrait-only layout misses.
  • East-west splits: the single biggest unlock. Using both roof faces roughly doubles capacity, trades ~10–15% of per-panel peak output for generation spread across morning and afternoon — a shape that actually suits home usage better. Most big systems on ordinary houses are east-west.
  • Higher-wattage panels: where space is tight, stepping from 400W to 450W+ panels adds ~12% capacity in the same footprint — the premium-panel maths in our best solar panels guide makes most sense on exactly these space-limited roofs.
  • The garage: flat or pitched, a garage or extension roof adds 4–8 panels and often faces a useful direction. Surveyors check it by default; homeowners forget it exists.

Panels → kilowatts → what you’ll generate

Panels (430–450W)System sizeAnnual output (typical UK roof)
6–8~3kW~2,550kWh
9–10~4kW~3,400kWh
14~6kW~5,100kWh
18~8kW~6,800kWh
22–24~10kW~8,500kWh

Handy calibration: the average UK household uses ~2,700–3,500kWh a year — the 9–10 panel row. Everything above it is EV, heat pump, battery and export territory, and larger systems bring their own grid rules (the G99 approval step covered in the 10kW guide).

If your roof comes up short

First: “short” is rarer than people fear — even 6–8 panels cuts a meaningful slice off bills, and payback on small systems is often just as fast per pound as big ones. If the maths still disappoints, the escalation path runs: higher-wattage panels (more kW, same tiles) → garage or outbuilding roofs → a ground-mounted array if you have the land → or skip generation and put the budget into a battery charged on cheap overnight rates, which needs no roof at all. A good surveyor will walk these options honestly rather than force panels onto a roof that doesn’t want them.

Fitting panels to your roof: pros & cons of maxing out

✓ Fill the roof when…

  • You have (or plan) an EV or heat pump
  • Both faces work for an east-west split
  • You’ll pair it with a battery and export tariff
  • Scaffolding’s up anyway — marginal panels are cheap
  • Usage is high: 4,000kWh+ and climbing

✗ Hold back when…

  • Extra panels would sit in real shade
  • Usage is low and export rates are your only payback
  • The marginal spaces need premium panels to justify
  • Grid limits would clip what you’d add anyway
  • Budget stretched — a right-sized system + battery beats a maxed roof alone

Frequently asked questions

How many solar panels can I fit on my roof?

Roughly your usable roof area divided by 2m². Measure width × slope length, subtract obstructions and a 30–40cm edge border, divide by 2. A typical semi’s main face holds 10–14 panels; both faces can double it.

How do I measure my roof without climbing on it?

Width from ground level along the wall; slope length ≈ 1.25 × the horizontal depth for a standard UK pitch. Satellite mapping tools cross-check the footprint — and a free installer survey does it properly with shade modelling included.

How many panels fit on a 3-bed semi?

Typically 10–14 on the main face (4–6kW with modern panels) — which is why the 4kW system is the UK standard. An east-west layout across both faces can reach 20+ panels and 8–10kW.

What reduces the number that fit?

Chimneys (2–3 spaces with clearance), roof windows (1–2 each), vents and aerials, the 30–40cm edge border installers must keep, and shade strips that make tiles technically available but economically pointless.

Is my roof too small to bother?

Rarely — 6–8 panels still meaningfully cuts bills, and 450W+ panels squeeze more from tight spaces. Beyond that: garage roofs, ground mounting, or a battery-first strategy on cheap-rate electricity.

Do solar roof surveys cost anything?

No. MCS-certified installers survey free as part of quoting — precise measurements, seasonal shade modelling, structural checks and a designed layout, with no obligation to proceed. It’s the definitive version of everything this page estimates.

The verdict

Roof capacity is solar’s opening question, and it’s friendlier than most people expect: the standard British semi comfortably holds the standard British system, and east-west layouts, landscape rows and forgotten garage roofs push far past it. The maths on this page gets you a confident estimate from your garden.

Then let professionals finish the job — the survey is free, it models the shade you can’t see from the ground, and it turns “roughly 12 panels” into a designed layout with a price attached. Estimate first, survey second, and never pay a penny for either.

Important

Going Solar UK is an introduction service, not an installer. We don’t carry out surveys or fit solar systems ourselves — free surveys are provided by the MCS-certified installers we introduce you to as part of their quoting process. Figures in this guide are indicative estimates; panel counts, structural suitability and layouts must be confirmed by a professional survey. Never climb on your roof to measure it.

We may receive a commission when we introduce you to an installer, at no cost to you. Any contract for work is directly between you and the installer.
