LG Solar Panels Review (2026): Are They Any Good?

LG made some of the best solar panels ever sold in the UK, then stopped making them in 2022. Thousands of UK homes still have LG NeON R, NeON 2 or Mono X panels on the roof, and some leftover stock still turns up for sale. This review covers how good LG panels were, what LG’s exit means for your warranty, how to decode an LG model number, what to do if a panel fails or you want to add more, whether to buy LG panels now, and the best modern alternatives.

★★★★★ Trusted by UK homeowners

The short version: LG solar panels were excellent, among the most reliable premium panels of their era. The NeON R used back-contact cells at up to about 22% efficiency, with a 25-year product and performance warranty guaranteeing at least 90.8% output after 25 years. But LG closed its solar panel business on 30 June 2022, citing fierce price competition and rising raw-material costs. If you have LG panels, they should keep working well for decades. LG committed to supporting existing customers, but a failed panel is now likely to be replaced with a compatible panel from another brand, not a new LG one. Keep your paperwork and go through your installer first. Don’t pay a premium for leftover LG stock today: modern back-contact panels from Aiko and premium ranges from REC match or beat them, with active manufacturer support. Below: LG’s exit, model codes, your warranty, replacing or adding panels, alternatives.

Does LG still make solar panels?

No. In February 2022, LG Electronics announced it would close its solar panel business, citing “intensification of price competition and the rising cost of raw materials”. Production continued into the second quarter of 2022 to build up stock for service support, and the closure was completed by 30 June 2022. LG made its panels in South Korea and, from 2019, at a plant in Huntsville, Alabama, which closed with the business. Panasonic, another premium name, also stopped making its own panels around the same time. That left the premium end of the market to REC, Maxeon (SunPower) and, more recently, back-contact panels from Chinese makers like Aiko.

LG’s exit wasn’t about quality. LG panels consistently scored well for reliability and low degradation. It was about a price war LG couldn’t win against much larger Chinese manufacturers.

Were LG solar panels any good?

Yes, very. From around 2014 to 2022, LG was one of the go-to premium brands for UK installers, alongside SunPower and REC. The highlights were:

  • NeON R. LG’s flagship used back-contact (IBC) cells, with all the wiring on the back, for a clean all-black look and efficiency of up to about 22%. That was top-tier at the time, and the same principle behind today’s Aiko panels.
  • Low degradation. LG’s NeON warranties guaranteed that output would fall by no more than about 0.3% a year after the first year, leaving at least 90.8% after 25 years on the NeON R. Most mainstream panels of the same era guaranteed around 80–84%.
  • Long product warranties. The NeON ranges carried 25 years on the product itself, when many rivals offered 10–12.
  • NeON 2 and NeON 2 BiFacial. These were LG’s mainstream premium lines. “Cello” multi-wire technology gave 19–21% efficiency, and the bifacial version captured light from both sides for ground mounts and carports (bifacial panels).

If your LG system was installed well, it should keep generating strongly into the late 2030s and beyond. See solar panel efficiency and best solar panels UK for how today’s panels compare.

LG solar panel models and codes decoded

LG model numbers look like LG370Q1C-A5. The number is the wattage, and the letter after it tells you the range:

Code (example)RangeTypical UK wattageApprox. efficiencyNotes
LGxxxQ1C / Q1K (e.g. LG370Q1C-A5)NeON R360–380W (60-cell); up to ~440W in larger formatsup to ~22%Back-contact cells, the flagship. K usually means all-black.
LGxxxN1C / N1K (e.g. LG335N1C-A5)NeON 2315–355W (60-cell); ~380–400W (72-cell)~19–21%The most common LG panel on UK roofs. K means black.
NeON 2 BiFacialNeON 2 BiFacial~390–440W~20%Two-sided, mostly for ground mounts and commercial use
LGxxxS1C (e.g. LG300S1C)Mono X / Mono X Plus270–300W~17–18%An older range with shorter warranty terms than NeON, so check your paperwork

A 60-cell LG NeON panel is roughly 1.7m × 1.0m, smaller than today’s 1.76m × 1.13m panels of 430–475W. That matters when replacing panels (see below). The model code is on a label on the back of each panel and on your MCS certificate and handover paperwork. See solar panel sizes, 300W and 400W panels.

What LG’s exit means for your warranty

When it closed the business, LG said it “will continue to stand behind its brand” and “will maintain support for customers of existing LG solar panels for a period of time after the business’s closure”, and it kept producing into 2022 to hold stock for servicing. In practice, for UK owners in 2026:

  • Your warranty terms haven’t changed, but LG no longer makes panels. So a successful claim is likely to be settled with a compatible panel from another manufacturer, or with compensation, rather than a new LG panel.
  • Start with your installer. Most UK warranty claims go through the original installer, who can diagnose the fault, document it and contact LG’s support. If your installer has ceased trading, an MCS-certified installer can inspect the system and help you pursue the claim.
  • Keep your paperwork. You’ll need the MCS certificate, the invoice and the panel serial numbers. Photos of the fault and monitoring data showing the drop in output help too.
  • The performance warranty is hard to claim on a single under-performing panel without proper testing. An installer can run an I-V curve or thermal test to prove it.
  • Labour isn’t usually covered. Scaffolding and fitting can cost more than the panel. Check whether your installer’s workmanship guarantee or your home insurance helps (solar and home insurance, storm damage).

The honest reality is that LG panels rarely fail, and when a system under-performs, the cause is far more often the inverter, which is a separate brand and warranty and typically needs replacing after 10–15 years. See solar panels not working, inverter replacement, how long inverters last and solar panel warranties explained.

Replacing a failed LG panel or adding more

Replacing one panel. A new panel needs to fit the gap and work electrically with the rest of the string. Modern panels are larger and have different voltages and currents than a 2016–2021 LG panel. The usual fixes are a smaller modern panel with a close electrical match, an optimiser on the new panel so it doesn’t drag the string down, or reworking the strings. On systems with micro-inverters, a like-for-like swap is simpler.

Adding panels to an LG system. Put the new panels on their own string, on a separate inverter input or a second inverter, rather than mixing them into the old LG string. It’s also a good moment to replace an ageing inverter with a hybrid inverter and add a battery. If the roof needs work, removal and refitting of the LG panels costs £500–£1,200, and they’re well worth putting back.

Moving house? An LG system is a selling point, so pass the paperwork on to the buyer (moving house with solar panels).

Should you buy LG solar panels now?

You’ll still see “LG solar panels for sale” on eBay, Amazon and trade clearance sites. It’s usually old stock from 2021–2022 or used panels from system upgrades. Unless it’s extremely cheap and for a shed, workshop or off-grid project, we’d avoid it. The panels are four or more years old before they’re fitted, the manufacturer no longer trades in solar, warranty support is uncertain, and an MCS installer may not fit discontinued or second-hand stock, which would cost you export payments. For a home roof, a current panel with an active manufacturer gives you more output per m², a clearer warranty and usually a lower price. See cheapest good panels.

LG batteries and inverters

People searching “LG solar panel battery” usually mean the LG Chem RESU home batteries, now made by LG Energy Solution. That’s a separate company from LG Electronics, which made the panels, and panel owners can pair any modern battery with an LG array. LG didn’t make UK home solar inverters, so your inverter will be another brand such as SolarEdge, Enphase, SMA, Solis or GivEnergy. If it’s a GivEnergy unit, see what its 2026 administration means (GivEnergy). Options: adding a battery to existing solar and best solar batteries.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • Outstanding build quality and reliability
  • NeON R back-contact cells at up to ~22%, top-tier in their day
  • 25-year product and performance warranties on NeON ranges
  • Very low degradation: at least 90.8% output after 25 years (NeON R)
  • Clean all-black designs

Cons

  • Discontinued since June 2022, with no new LG panels
  • Warranty replacements likely to be another brand
  • Smaller and less efficient than today’s panels
  • Leftover or used stock carries warranty and MCS uncertainty
  • Older Mono X ranges had shorter warranties

Verdict: are LG solar panels any good?

LG solar panels were some of the best ever sold in the UK, but you can’t buy new ones, and you shouldn’t pay a premium for leftover stock. If you already have LG NeON R or NeON 2 panels, you’re in good shape. They’re built to last well beyond 25 years, degrade slowly, and are far more likely to outlive your inverter than fail. Keep your paperwork, monitor your output, and go through your installer if anything goes wrong.

If you’re buying now, today’s panels give you more for less. Choose Aiko or REC for an LG-style premium system, or Trina, JA or Jinko for best value, all with active manufacturers behind the warranty.

LG solar panels: frequently asked questions

Does LG still make solar panels?

No. LG Electronics announced in February 2022 that it was closing its solar panel business because of intensifying price competition and rising raw material costs. Production continued into the second quarter of 2022 to build stock for service support, and the closure was completed by 30 June 2022. LG no longer makes or sells new solar panels.

Are LG solar panels any good?

Yes. LG panels were among the best premium panels of their era. The NeON R used back-contact cells at up to about 22% efficiency with a 25-year product and performance warranty guaranteeing at least 90.8% output after 25 years, and the NeON 2 was a reliable, efficient mainstream premium panel. If you own them, they should keep performing for decades, but you can no longer buy new LG panels.

Will LG still honour my solar panel warranty?

LG said it would continue to stand behind its brand and maintain support for existing solar panel customers after closing the business. Because LG no longer makes panels, a successful claim is likely to be settled with a compatible panel from another manufacturer or compensation. Start with your original installer, keep your MCS certificate, invoice and serial numbers, and note that labour and scaffolding are not usually covered.

What should I replace a broken LG solar panel with?

A replacement needs to fit the space and be electrically compatible with the rest of the string. Modern panels are larger and have different voltages, so installers typically use a closely matched smaller panel, fit an optimiser to the new panel, or rework the strings. On micro-inverter systems, a swap is simpler. If you’re adding panels rather than replacing one, put them on a separate string or inverter.

Can I still buy LG solar panels in the UK?

Only as leftover or used stock, typically on eBay, Amazon or clearance sites. For a home roof we’d avoid them: the panels are several years old before fitting, warranty support is uncertain, and an MCS installer may not fit discontinued or second-hand panels, which would cost you export payments. Current panels from Aiko, REC, Trina, JA Solar or Jinko give more output with active manufacturer support.

Where were LG solar panels made?

LG made its solar panels in South Korea and, from 2019, at a factory in Huntsville, Alabama, in the US. The Alabama plant closed when LG exited the solar panel business in 2022. LG’s home batteries, sold as LG Chem RESU, are made by LG Energy Solution, a separate company.

This review is independent, and Going Solar UK is not affiliated with LG. LG’s closure details are as announced by LG Electronics in February 2022. Specifications, efficiencies and warranty terms are typical for each range and vary by model and year, so check your own datasheet and warranty certificate. Warranty claim outcomes depend on LG’s current support arrangements, which may change. Nothing here is legal advice. Always use an MCS-certified installer for repairs, replacements and new systems.
