SolarWatt Solar Panels Review (2026): Are They Any Good?
Solarwatt is the German brand known for glass-glass panels and one of the longest warranties you can buy. But the company has changed a lot since 2024: it closed its Dresden factory and now has its panels built in Asia. This review covers the 2026 Panel vision range, efficiency, the 30-year warranty and what it really covers, where the panels are made now, what they cost in the UK, and how they compare with Trina, Aiko, REC and Jinko.

Who are Solarwatt?
Solarwatt was founded in Dresden, Germany, in 1993, which makes it one of the oldest solar companies still trading. It went through insolvency in 2012 and was rescued by Stefan Quandt, the billionaire BMW shareholder, whose investment company has been the majority owner since. That link later produced a home battery developed with the BMW Group.
The company built its name on glass-glass panels, which it started making long before the big Asian manufacturers did, and on warranties to match. It says it has supplied more than 600,000 solar systems across Europe. Its ten-millionth panel was fitted on a house in Suffolk in June 2023. The UK arm, Solarwatt Technologies Ltd, was set up in 2021 and is based in Surrey.
Solarwatt sells through a network of partner installers and a few specialist wholesalers. You won’t see it on most quotes, because most UK installers default to JA, Jinko, Trina or Aiko, so you may need to ask for it. For how the brands compare overall, see best solar panels UK.
Where are Solarwatt panels made?
Not in Germany any more. This is the biggest change for anyone reading older reviews:
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 1993–2023 | Solarwatt designs and builds panels in Dresden. “Made in Germany” is a core selling point |
| May 2024 | Solarwatt shuts its battery factory in Germany |
| August 2024 | The 300MW Dresden panel factory closes, with about 190 jobs lost. The chief executive at the time says production in Germany had become “extremely difficult economically” |
| November 2024 | Solarwatt announces it will cut its workforce from about 850 to 350 and become a “solution provider”. Panels and batteries are now built by contract manufacturers in Asia to Solarwatt’s design |
| 2026 | New Panel vision M 5.5 and L 5.5 models launch in the UK |
That puts Solarwatt in the same position as almost every other brand: designed in Europe, built in Asia. It doesn’t make the panels worse, but it does remove one of the reasons people paid extra. If a salesperson tells you today’s Solarwatt panels are German-made, ask for the datasheet and the factory. Other European names have gone further and left the market altogether, as our Sharp and Bosch reviews explain.
The Solarwatt Panel vision range in 2026
| Model | Power | Cells | Size and weight | Product warranty | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Panel vision M 5.5 (new 2026) | 460–480W | N-type TOPCon, bifacial, glass-glass | 1,762 × 1,134 × 35mm, 24.8kg | 30 years | Most homes |
| Panel vision M 5.0 | Up to 455W | N-type TOPCon, bifacial, glass-glass | 1,762 × 1,134 × 35mm, 24.8kg | 30 years | Homes, previous generation |
| Panel vision AM 4.5 | Up to 425W | N-type TOPCon, bifacial, glass-glass | 1,722 × 1,134 × 35mm, 24kg | 30 years | Smaller roofs |
| Panel vision L 5.5 (new 2026) | 515W | N-type TOPCon, bifacial, glass-glass | 1,977 × 1,134 × 35mm, 27.6kg | 25 years | Large roofs |
| Panel vision XL 5.0 | Up to 620W | N-type TOPCon, bifacial, glass-glass | 2,382 × 1,134 × 30mm, 33.4kg | 15 years | Commercial |
| Panel classic | Up to 455W | Glass front, foil back | Similar to vision M | 20 years | Lower budgets |
The Panel vision M 5.5 is the one to ask for. It comes in three finishes: black (an all-black look), style (black frame with see-through gaps between the cells) and pure (silver frame). Note that the warranty gets shorter as the panel gets bigger: 30 years on the M, 25 on the L and 15 on the XL. The Panel classic is Solarwatt’s cheaper glass-and-foil panel with a 20-year product warranty and a 25-year power guarantee. If you’re paying for Solarwatt, the glass-glass vision is the point. See solar panel sizes and types of solar panels.

Solarwatt Panel vision M 5.5
★★★★☆ Excellent panel and warranty, at a premium that’s harder to justify than it was
The bottom line: a very good panel with the best warranty wording on the market. You pay well above the going rate for it, from a company that has recently shrunk.
Get my SolarWatt price →What glass-glass means and why it matters
A standard solar panel has glass on the front and a plastic sheet on the back. A glass-glass panel has a sheet of toughened glass on both sides, 2mm each on the vision M 5.5, with the cells sealed in between. That matters for three reasons:
- The cells are better protected. Plastic backsheets can crack or let in moisture after 15 to 20 years. Glass doesn’t. It also resists the salt and ammonia that damage panels near the coast and on farms.
- The cells flex less. They sit in the middle of the sandwich, so wind, snow and people walking on the roof are less likely to cause tiny cracks.
- It degrades more slowly. That’s why Solarwatt can guarantee 90% of rated output after 30 years.
The vision M 5.5 is rated for 8,100Pa of pressure load, well above the usual 5,400Pa, and carries the top Class A fire rating. The trade-off is weight. At 24.8kg it’s 3–4kg heavier than a typical panel of the same size, which any normal roof handles easily.
The panels are also bifacial, meaning the back can generate from reflected light. On a pitched house roof, with the panel a few centimetres above the tiles, that adds almost nothing. It helps on flat roofs, ground mounts and carports (bifacial panels explained).

Get My SolarWatt Price →Efficiency and real-world UK output
The Panel vision M 5.5 runs from 460W to 480W, which works out at 23% to 24% efficiency. That’s a step ahead of most mainstream TOPCon panels at 22–23%, and level with the best you can buy apart from back-contact panels such as Aiko. Its temperature coefficient is -0.29% per °C, which is good: it loses less output than older panels on a hot roof.
In practice, one 470W panel on a south-facing UK roof generates roughly 430–490kWh a year depending on where you live. Nine of them make a 4.2kW system producing about 3,900–4,400kWh a year. The difference between this and a good 450W mainstream panel is about 4%, which is real but small. The stronger argument for Solarwatt is how well it holds that output over 30 years. See solar panel efficiency, the most efficient panels and solar panel output.
The 30-year warranty explained
This is the best reason to buy Solarwatt, and the detail is stronger than the headline.
| Cover | Solarwatt Panel vision M | Typical mainstream panel |
|---|---|---|
| Product warranty | 30 years | 15–25 years |
| Power guarantee | 30 years: 97% after year one, then no more than 0.345% lost a year, 90% at year 30 | 25–30 years, about 87–88% at the end |
| Labour, removal and refitting | Covered. Solarwatt says it pays the costs of removal, installation, repair or replacement | Usually not covered. You get a replacement panel only |
| Registration | Panel warranty activates automatically | Often needs registering |
The labour cover is the part most people miss. With many brands, a successful claim gets you a new panel delivered, and you then pay for scaffolding and an installer to swap it. That can cost several hundred pounds. Solarwatt’s terms say those costs are covered.
Two cautions. The 30-year product warranty applies to the vision M and AM panels only: the L has 25 years and the XL 15. And any warranty is only as good as the company behind it in year 20, which is the next question. More in solar panel warranties explained.
Is Solarwatt a safe bet for 30 years?
It’s a fair question after the last two years. On the worrying side, Solarwatt has closed both its German factories and announced it would cut its workforce by more than half. It has been through insolvency once before, in 2012. A company that no longer makes its own panels depends on its suppliers and its brand.
On the reassuring side, it has a very wealthy majority owner in Stefan Quandt, who has backed it since that rescue. The restructuring was a decision to stop losing money on manufacturing, which is what most European solar brands have had to do. And it is still launching new products in the UK in 2026. Solarwatt is privately owned, so it doesn’t publish detailed accounts the way a listed company such as Canadian Solar does.
Our view is that Solarwatt is more likely than not to be around to honour its warranty, but it isn’t as certain as it looked in 2023. Whatever panel you choose, a ten-year insurance-backed workmanship guarantee from your installer is the cover you’re most likely to use.
Solarwatt solar panel prices in the UK
Solarwatt doesn’t publish UK prices, and you buy through an installer. Third-party estimates put a glass-glass Solarwatt panel at about £220–£400, against £70–£120 for a mainstream panel of the same size. On a typical home, that works out as follows:
| System (fitted, 0% VAT) | Mainstream panels | Solarwatt Panel vision (estimate) | Extra cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3kW (7 panels) | £4,500–£6,000 | £5,600–£8,000 | £1,100–£2,000 |
| 4kW (9 panels) | £5,500–£7,500 | £7,000–£10,000 | £1,500–£2,500 |
| 6kW (13 panels) | £7,000–£9,500 | £9,000–£13,000 | £2,000–£3,500 |
These are our estimates from typical panel prices, and your quote will depend on the installer and the finish you choose. The saving on your bills is almost the same whichever panel you fit, so the extra £1,500–£2,500 on a 4kW system adds roughly two to three years to the payback. All installed solar carries 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. See solar panel cost UK and 4kW systems.
Solarwatt vs Trina, Aiko, REC and Jinko

| Build | Glass-glass | Glass-glass | Glass and backsheet, or glass-glass | Glass and backsheet | Both available |
| Efficiency | 23–24% | About 22–23% | About 24% | About 22–23% | About 22–23% |
| Product warranty | 30 years | 25 years | 25 years | 20–25 years | 25 years |

| Relative price | Highest | Low | Mid to high | High | Low |
| Our review | This page | Trina | Aiko | REC | Jinko |
Competitor figures are typical for current ranges, so check the datasheet for the exact model you’re quoted. The important row is the first one. Five years ago, glass-glass was Solarwatt’s own territory. Today Trina’s Vertex S+ is a glass-glass TOPCon panel with a 25-year product warranty at a fraction of the price, and it has a strong record in independent reliability testing. That is Solarwatt’s real competition. What Solarwatt still offers that the others don’t is five more years of product cover and labour costs included. Also worth a look: JA Solar and LONGi.
Solarwatt batteries and the full system
Solarwatt now sells itself as a complete system under the “Solarwatt Home” name, and installers will often quote the whole set:
- Battery vision. A modular home battery of up to 18.2kWh, following on from the Battery flex developed with BMW. It has a 12-year warranty guaranteeing 70% of capacity.
- Inverter vision. A 10-year product warranty.
- Manager flex. The energy manager that controls the battery, EV charging and heat pump. Two-year warranty.
- Charger vision. An EV charger with a three-year warranty.
You don’t have to buy the whole set. Solarwatt panels work with any inverter and battery, and a mixed system is often cheaper. Compare the battery with the options in best solar batteries before agreeing to a single-brand package.
Older Solarwatt panels
If you already have Solarwatt panels, they are probably the 60M vision series, glass-glass panels of around 300W to 380W built in Dresden. They came with a 30-year product warranty and a power guarantee of 87% after 30 years. Those warranties still stand, and Solarwatt UK is the place to start a claim, through your installer. A failed panel can be replaced with a current one of similar voltage, ideally with an optimiser (optimisers). The most popular upgrade is a battery, which works with any existing system (adding a battery).

- Glass-glass build with high wind and snow load ratings
- 23–24% efficiency on the new vision M 5.5
- Backed by a wealthy long-term owner
Cons
- Typically 20–40% dearer than a mainstream system
- No longer made in Germany since August 2024
- Company has more than halved its workforce
- Cheaper brands now offer glass-glass too
- Fewer UK installers stock it
- Shorter warranties on the larger L and XL panels
Verdict: are Solarwatt solar panels any good?
4.0 / 5. Solarwatt makes an excellent glass-glass panel with the strongest warranty wording on the UK market: 30 years on the product, 90% output at year 30, and labour costs covered. If you plan to stay in your home for decades and want the most cover you can get, it’s a sound choice.
But the case is weaker than it was. The panels are no longer made in Germany, the company has shrunk sharply, and Trina now sells a glass-glass panel with a 25-year warranty for far less. For most households, a mainstream panel from Trina, Jinko or JA Solar gives nearly the same output and a faster payback, with Aiko the pick for top efficiency. Get Solarwatt priced alongside one of them, and choose the installer as carefully as the panel (how to choose, MCS certification).

Solarwatt solar panels: frequently asked questions
Are Solarwatt solar panels any good?
Yes. The 2026 Solarwatt Panel vision M 5.5 is a glass-glass N-type TOPCon panel of 460–480W at 23–24% efficiency, with a 30-year product warranty and a guarantee of 90% output after 30 years. The warranty also covers the cost of removal and refitting. The drawbacks are price, typically 20–40% above a mainstream system, and the fact that the panels are no longer made in Germany.
Where are Solarwatt solar panels made?
Since August 2024, Solarwatt panels have been built by contract manufacturers in Asia to Solarwatt’s design. The company closed its 300MW factory in Dresden, Germany, that month, saying production in Germany had become uneconomic. Solarwatt is still headquartered in Dresden, where its products are designed. Older Solarwatt panels were made in Germany.
What warranty do Solarwatt solar panels have?
The Panel vision M and AM glass-glass panels have a 30-year product warranty and a 30-year power guarantee: 97% after the first year, no more than 0.345% lost each year after that, and at least 90% at year 30. Solarwatt says it covers the costs of removal, installation, repair or replacement. The larger vision L has a 25-year product warranty and the XL 15 years. The glass-and-foil Panel classic has 20 years.
How much do Solarwatt solar panels cost in the UK?
Solarwatt doesn’t publish UK prices. Third-party estimates put a glass-glass Solarwatt panel at about £220–£400, against £70–£120 for a mainstream panel. We estimate a fitted 4kW Solarwatt system at roughly £7,000–£10,000 in 2026, compared with £5,500–£7,500 for mainstream panels. All installed solar carries 0% VAT until 31 March 2027.
Is Solarwatt still in business?
Yes. Solarwatt closed its German factories in 2024 and announced it would cut its workforce from about 850 to 350, but it continues to trade, sells in the UK through Solarwatt Technologies Ltd and launched new panel models for 2026. It is majority-owned by Stefan Quandt, the BMW shareholder who rescued it from insolvency in 2012.
Are glass-glass solar panels worth the extra money?
Glass-glass panels protect the cells better, degrade more slowly and usually carry longer warranties, so they are worth having. They are no longer worth a large premium, though, because mainstream brands such as Trina now sell glass-glass panels with 25-year warranties at close to standard prices. Pay extra for Solarwatt only if the 30-year warranty and included labour cover matter to you.
Specifications and warranty terms are from Solarwatt’s UK product pages, warranty page and the Panel vision M 5.5 datasheet, checked in October 2026. Whole-panel efficiency is calculated from published power and dimensions. Factory closures and restructuring are as reported by PV Tech (August 2024), pv magazine (May 2024) and German press (November 2024). Solarwatt is privately owned and its current finances are not public. Competitor figures are typical for current ranges. Solarwatt prices are estimates based on third-party panel prices, and other prices are typical 2026 UK figures with 0% VAT, which applies until 31 March 2027. Always confirm the exact model, datasheet, factory and warranty with an MCS-certified installer.
