Octopus Energy Solar Panels Review (2026): Prices, Panels, Tariffs & Verdict

Octopus is the supplier most people already trust, and its solar service is the one most people quote first. This is an independent look at what you actually get — the kit, the price, the wait, the tariffs, the exclusions — and at when a local MCS installer will beat it. If you already have panels and just want to register them with Octopus or pick the right tariff, that’s covered too.

★★★★★ Rated by UK homeowners

The short version: Octopus fits JA Solar 450W all-black panels with Enphase microinverters, installed by its own MCS team, with a 25-year product warranty and 30-year output guarantee — good kit, properly backed. Its tariffs (Flux, Intelligent Flux, Outgoing) are the best in the UK for solar owners and are the real reason to buy from them. Against that: prices start at £6,663 for just two panels, a typical 8-panel-plus-battery system is £8,600–£9,000 against £6,500–£7,500 locally, you get no choice of panel brand, and flats, flat roofs, north-facing roofs and three-phase homes are excluded. There are no free Octopus solar panels — only ECO4 for qualifying households — and you don’t have to buy from Octopus to use its tariffs. Verdict: 4.1/5. Get the quote, then get two local ones and put them side by side.

What Octopus actually offers

Octopus Energy is the UK’s largest domestic energy supplier, and since 2022 it has run an in-house solar and battery installation business alongside its heat pump arm. You choose a number of panels (2 to 36), optionally a battery, get a remote survey and then a fixed quote, and Octopus’s own MCS-certified installers do the job, with vetted Trusted Trader partners as overflow in some areas. Everything — panels, microinverters, battery, scaffolding, electrical work, DNO paperwork — is in the price, and once it’s in you’re moved onto one of Octopus’s solar tariffs. It’s a genuinely joined-up product, which is rare in this industry; the question is whether the convenience is worth the premium.

Octopus solar panel prices (2026)

Octopus is unusual in publishing prices. These are its own figures from spring and summer 2026, all including installation, scaffolding and 0% VAT:

Octopus packageOctopus priceTypical local MCS quote*
2 panels (~0.9kW), no battery£6,663Not usually offered — too small
8 panels (~3.6kW) + 5kWh battery£8,623 – £9,018£6,500 – £7,800
12 panels (~5.4kW) + 10kWh smart battery£11,115£9,000 – £10,500
Battery only (retrofit)£3,947 – £7,999£3,500 – £6,500
Deposit£500, non-refundableUsually £0–£500, often refundable

*Our 2026 ranges for equivalent Tier 1 kit from independent MCS installers; see the solar panel cost guide for the full breakdown. Two things stand out. The two-panel headline price is a marketing number — nobody should buy a 0.9kW system for £6,663 when a 4kW system with a battery costs a local installer’s customer around £10,000. And at the realistic sizes, Octopus runs £1,000–£2,500 above the market. That premium buys the in-house team, the warranty backing of a very large company and the tariff integration — which, as we’ll see, may be worth it to you. It also doesn’t buy bird proofing, which is extra.

What panels & batteries do Octopus use?

ComponentWhat Octopus fitsOur view
PanelsJA Solar 450W all-black mono, ~1.7m × 1.1mTier 1, well-regarded, not premium. Same panel local installers fit for less.
InverterEnphase microinverters (one per panel)Excellent for shaded or complex roofs; 25-year warranty. Costlier than a string inverter on a simple roof — see micro vs string.
BatteriesTesla Powerwall 3 (13.5kWh, built-in inverter), GivEnergy, SolarEdge, EnphaseStrong line-up. Powerwall 3 is the flagship; GivEnergy the value pick. Compare in our best solar batteries guide.
Panel warranty25-year product, 30-year linear outputAmong the best on the market — read what a solar warranty really covers.

The kit is good and honest. What you don’t get is choice: if you’d rather have Aiko, REC or LONGi panels, a hybrid string inverter, or a battery brand Octopus doesn’t stock, you’re out of their process. For most three-bed semis with a plain south-facing roof, the JA-plus-Enphase combination is perfectly sensible — but it’s the one recipe, whatever your roof.

Survey, wait times & installation

The process is online-first: you build a package on the site, pay the £500 deposit, and Octopus does a remote survey from satellite imagery and your photos before a fixed quote and, where needed, a physical survey. From survey to a finished install is typically 4–6 weeks, longer in busy periods and where G99 DNO approval is needed (any system with a battery, so most of them). The installation itself takes 2–4 days plus scaffolding up and down. That’s broadly in line with a good local installer — see how long solar installation takes — and the paperwork (DNO, MCS certificate, export MPAN) is handled for you, which is a real convenience.

The recurring complaint in customer reviews isn’t the workmanship, it’s the pipeline: remote surveys that miss something, quotes that change after the physical survey, and slow communication between deposit and install date. It’s a big operation and it can feel like one. The counter-argument is that when something goes wrong with an Octopus install in year eight, Octopus will still exist — which is not something you can say for every local firm, and is worth reading our installer checklist with in mind.

Who Octopus won’t install for

This is the section that catches people. Octopus’s own eligibility rules currently exclude:

  • Flats and maisonettes — owner-occupied houses only.
  • Flat roofs — pitched roofs only, even though flat-roof solar is routine for local installers.
  • North-facing roofs — Octopus declines them; in practice north-facing panels still produce 55–65% of a south roof’s output and can pay back.
  • Three-phase supplies — larger homes, some rural properties and anything with a big EV or heat pump load already on three-phase.
  • Homes needing structural work, asbestos removal or unusual roof coverings — thatch, slate in poor condition, and so on.

None of these mean you can’t have solar. They mean Octopus’s standardised process can’t do it, and a local installer can. If you’re in any of these groups, skip the Octopus quote and go straight to independent ones.

Best Octopus tariffs for solar owners

This is where Octopus is unbeatable, and it’s important to know that you don’t have to have bought your panels from Octopus to use any of these. Anyone with MCS-certified solar and a smart meter can switch to them.

TariffBest forHow it works
Outgoing OctopusSolar, no batteryFlat export rate — currently around 12p/kWh — for every unit you send to the grid. Simple, no faff. Roughly triple the 4.1p SEG fallback.
Octopus FluxSolar + battery, hands-onCheap import 2am–5am, standard daytime, premium export 4pm–7pm. You (or your battery schedule) charge overnight and dump to the grid at teatime.
Intelligent Octopus FluxSolar + compatible battery, hands-offOctopus controls the battery for you and guarantees import/export rates. Needs a supported battery (GivEnergy, Tesla, Enphase and others). The best set-and-forget option in the UK.
Agile OutgoingOptimisersHalf-hourly export rates that follow wholesale prices — can beat everything above on a sunny, windy evening, or pay very little at noon.
Intelligent Octopus GoSolar + EVNot an export tariff, but cheap 7p overnight import for EV owners — see our Intelligent Octopus Go review.

Rule of thumb: no battery → Outgoing; battery → Flux, or Intelligent Flux if your battery’s on the list and you’d rather not think about it. Compare the alternatives in our E.ON SEG tariff guide — the gap between suppliers is the difference between £100 and £400 a year in export income on a typical 4kW system. Rates change several times a year, so check the live figures before switching.

Registering existing panels with Octopus

A large share of people searching for “Octopus solar panels” already have panels and want the export payments. The process:

  1. Make sure you have a smart meter that records export — most SMETS2 meters do; see solar and smart meters. If you’re on SMETS1 you may need it upgraded first.
  2. Gather your MCS certificate, your DNO notification or approval letter (G98/G99) and a photo of your generation meter reading.
  3. Log in to your Octopus account, find the solar/export section and upload the documents.
  4. Octopus applies for an export MPAN from your network operator — typically two to four weeks — then switches you onto your chosen export tariff.

Yes, you do need to tell Octopus you have solar: without an export tariff you’re giving surplus power away for nothing. If your system was fitted under the old Feed-in Tariff you keep your FiT payments and don’t move to an export tariff — check before you change anything.

Free panels, finance & grants

Free Octopus solar panels don’t exist. The searches for them come from adverts and social posts, and the only genuine route to free or heavily subsidised panels is ECO4 — a government scheme for households on qualifying benefits with a low EPC rating, which Octopus can install under like any other approved firm. If someone offers you “free Octopus panels” outside that, read our solar scams guide first. The “Sunsave subscription” that appears in the same searches is a separate company’s product, not Octopus.

Finance: Octopus offers fixed-term loans through Zopa Bank at the point of purchase, so you can pay monthly rather than upfront. It isn’t 0%; check the APR against a green home-improvement loan from your own bank, because on a £9,000 system a few percentage points is several hundred pounds. Grants: everyone gets 0% VAT until 31 March 2027 and export payments; the full list of what’s real is in our solar grants guide. Octopus does not offer its own solar grant.

The honest reading: Octopus’s tariffs are its real product, and you can have them either way. What you’re paying the premium for is one accountable company and a very safe warranty. If that’s worth £1,500 to you, buy from Octopus with a clear conscience. If you’d rather have that £1,500 as a bigger battery, or your home fails their rules, a good local installer plus an Octopus tariff gives you the same outcome for less. Either way, the mistake is taking the first quote — theirs or anyone’s.

Pros

  • Own MCS-certified installation team; paperwork handled end to end
  • Tier 1 JA panels, Enphase micros, Powerwall 3 option
  • 25-year product / 30-year output warranty from a company that will still exist
  • Flux and Intelligent Flux are the best solar tariffs in the UK
  • Published, transparent pricing — rare in this industry

Cons

  • £1,000–£2,500 above a comparable local quote
  • No choice of panel brand or inverter type
  • Flats, flat roofs, north-facing and three-phase homes excluded
  • £500 non-refundable deposit before the physical survey
  • Remote-survey process can mean revised quotes and slow communication
  • No 0% finance; no free panels despite what the adverts imply

Verdict: 4.1 / 5

Octopus Energy’s solar service is good, safe and expensive. The kit is solid, the warranties are excellent, the tariffs are the best available, and the company will still be around when your inverter needs looking at. You pay for that certainty with a premium of £1,000–£2,500, a single panel brand and a set of eligibility rules that exclude a lot of ordinary homes.

Our advice is the same as for every big-brand install: get the Octopus quote, then get two from vetted local MCS installers for the identical spec, and decide with the three in front of you. Whichever you choose, switch to Flux or Outgoing afterwards.

Octopus Energy solar panels: frequently asked questions

Are Octopus Energy solar panels any good?

Yes — Octopus fits Tier 1 JA Solar 450W all-black panels with Enphase microinverters, installed by its own MCS-certified team, with a 25-year product warranty and a 30-year output guarantee. The kit is good and the tariffs are the best in the UK for solar owners. The trade-offs are no choice of panel brand, a higher entry price than most local installers, and strict eligibility rules.

How much do Octopus solar panels cost?

Octopus’s published prices start at £6,663 for a two-panel system with no battery. A typical 8-panel system with a 5kWh battery is around £8,600–£9,000, and 12 panels with a 10kWh smart battery around £11,100. All prices include installation, scaffolding and 0% VAT; bird proofing is extra and a £500 non-refundable deposit is taken at booking. Equivalent systems from local MCS installers typically run £1,000–£2,500 less.

What solar panels does Octopus use?

Octopus currently fits JA Solar 450W all-black monocrystalline panels (about 1.7m x 1.1m) with Enphase microinverters, and offers Tesla Powerwall 3, GivEnergy, SolarEdge and Enphase batteries. You can choose how many panels (2 to 36) and which battery, but not the panel brand.

What’s the best Octopus tariff if I have solar panels?

For solar without a battery, Outgoing Octopus (a flat export rate, currently 12p/kWh) is the simple choice. With a battery, Octopus Flux gives cheap overnight import and a premium export window from 4–7pm; Intelligent Octopus Flux goes further by controlling a compatible battery automatically. Agile Outgoing pays half-hourly wholesale rates and suits people who like to optimise. You don’t need to have bought your panels from Octopus to use any of them.

How do I register my existing solar panels with Octopus?

Log in to your Octopus account, go to the solar/export section and upload your MCS certificate, your DNO approval or notification letter, and a photo of your generation meter. Octopus then applies for an export MPAN (which can take a few weeks) and switches you to an export tariff. You need a smart meter that can record export for Outgoing, Flux and Agile Outgoing.

Does Octopus Energy do free solar panels?

No. Octopus does not offer free solar panels. The only route to free or heavily subsidised panels is the government ECO4 scheme for households on qualifying benefits with a low EPC, which Octopus can install under. Octopus does offer finance through Zopa Bank to spread the cost. The “Sunsave subscription” people search for is a different company, not Octopus.

Going Solar UK is independent and not affiliated with Octopus Energy. Octopus prices, packages, hardware, eligibility rules and tariff rates are as published by Octopus Energy in 2026 and change frequently — confirm current figures before deciding. Local installer price ranges are our 2026 estimates for equivalent MCS-certified systems. 0% VAT on solar applies until 31 March 2027 per HMRC. Always use an MCS-certified installer and compare at least three quotes.
